Free hash generator
Need to check a download or compare two files? Get the SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-384, SHA-1 and MD5 of any text or file. It all happens in your own browser, so nothing you hash is sent to us.
Worked out on your device. Nothing is sent to WPfoss. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checking a file arrived intact, but not for security.
Questions about the hash generator
Is what I type or the file I pick sent to you?
No. The hash is worked out by your own browser, on your device. There is nothing on our server for this tool, so the text or file never leaves your computer.
What is a hash used for?
A hash is a short fingerprint of some data. Change one letter and the fingerprint changes completely. It is used to check a download arrived intact, to compare two files without opening them, and inside many security systems.
Which one should I use?
SHA-256 for almost everything. Use whichever one a website lists next to a download when you are checking that download. MD5 and SHA-1 are only good for spotting accidental damage: people can deliberately make two different files with the same MD5 or SHA-1.
Can I use this to store passwords?
No. A plain hash of a password is quick to guess with modern computers. Systems that store passwords need a slow, salted method made for the job, and that is a decision for whoever builds the system.
Can a hash be turned back into the text?
Not directly. But short or common text can be found by trying guesses until one matches, which is why a hash on its own does not hide a password.
